4) Pranayama (Rythmic control of the breath): Just as the world Yoga is one of wide import, so also is ‘prana’. Prana means breath, respiration, life, vitality, wind energy or strength. It also connoyes the soul as opposed to the body. The word is generally used in the plural to indicate vital breaths. ‘Ayama’ means length, expansion, stretching or restraint. Pranayama thus connotes extension of breath and its control.
(a). Inhalation or inspiration, which is termed Puraka

(c). Retention or holding the breath, a state where there is no inhalation or exhalation, which is termed Kumbhaka.
Pranayama is thus the science of breath. It is the hub round which the wheel of life revolves. Prana in the body of the individual (Jivatma) is part of cosmic breath of the U (Paramatma). An attempt is made to harmonise the individual breath (panda-prana) with the cosmic breath (Brahmanda-prana) through practice of Pranayama.
Prana (Vayu) one of the most subtle forms of energy is air. This vital energy which also pervades the human body is classified in five main categories in the Hatha Yoga.
These are termed as : Prana, Which moves in the region of the heart and controls respiration; Apana, which moves in the sphere of thelower abdomen and controls the functioning of eliminating urine and faeces; Samana, which strokes the gastric fires to aid digestion; Udana, which dwells in the thoracic cavity and controls the intake of air and food; and Vyana, which pervades the entire body and distributes the energy derived from food and breath.
There are also five subsidiaries Vagus. These are: Naga, which relieves abdominal pressure by belching, Kurma, which controls the movements of the eyelids to prevents foreign matter or too bright a light entering the eyes; Krkara, which prevents substances passing up the nasal passages and down the throat by making one sneeze or cough; Devadatta, which provides for the intakes of extra oxygen in a tried body by causing a Yawn; and last Dhanamjaya, which remains in the body even after death and sometimes bloats up a corpse.
5) Prathyahara : If a man’s reason succumbs to the pull of his senses he is lost. On the other hand, if there is rhythmic control of breath, the senses instead of running after external objects desire turn inwards and man is set free from their tyranny. This stages is called prthyahara, when the senses are brought under control.
6) Dharna : When the body have been tempered by asanas, when the mind has been refined by the fire of parnayama and when the senses have been brought under control by parathyahara, the sadhaka reaches the sixth stage called dharna. These last stages are called antaratma sadhana, the quest of the soul. 1. Yama (Ethical disciplines): The great commandments transcending creed, country age and time. They are: (A). Ahimsa(non-violence) (B). Satya(truth) (C). Asteya(non-stealing) (D). Brahmacharya(Continence) (E). Aparigraha(non-conveting) These commandments are the rules of morality for society and the individual, which if not obeyed bring chaos, violence, untruth, stealing, dissipation and covetousness. The roots of these evils are the emotions of greed, desire and attachments, which may be mild, medium or excessive. They bring pain and ignorance. Patanjali strikes at the roots of these evils by changing the direction of one’s thinking along the five principles of Yama. 2. Niyama (Self purification by discipline): Niyama are the rules of conduct that apply to individual discipline, while yama are universal in their application. The five Niyama listed by Patanjali are: (A). Saucha (Purity) (B). Santosa (Contentment) (C). Tapas (Ardour or Austerily) (D). Svadhyaya (Study of the self) (E). Isvara Pranidana (Dedication to the Lord) 3. Asana (Posture): The third elements of Yoga are asana or posture. A steady and pleasant posture produces mental equilibrium and prevents fickleness and mind. Asanas are not merely gymnastic exercises; they are posture. Fitness isn’t Health
Health, fitness and performance are the three separate and poorly correlated phenomena. Health is generally defined as the freedom from disease. Fitness strictly relates to your ability to meet the demands of your environment. Performance is how well you accomplish a task.
You can be healthy without being fit. You can be in poor health and perform superbly. Sick athletes break records all the time. Every Olympic competition is populated by athletes with colds, fevers, infections and diarrhea. They invariably complete, and perform to their level.
The idea that sports make you healthy is a shibboleth. Sports can actually hurt you. They are not unhealthy per se, but they can be. You don’t have to be fit to be healthy. If health is defined as lack of disease, then fitness is not health. Only when you definition of health includes functional wellness – meaning the ability to cope with your environment – do health, fitness and performance coincide.
I was at a faculty picnic a few years back, swimming with a colleague of mine, John Sellwood. He was dying of lung cancer. One lung had been removed; the other was infected. He was to go into the hospital the next day. Both of us had been college swimmers. We’d been swimming for a while when he said,”I’ll race you fifty yards”.
“You’ve already given me my handicap.” I said, and I thought it gave me an unfair advantage. We started off even. I didn’t deliberately let him beat me, but he did. The next day he entered the Hospital, and a month later he was dead. I think of no better illustration of lack of correlation between health and performance.
Fitness means the development of components – muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. Suppose I go to a gym and develop all these components Am I going to swim or ski or play basketball better? Probably not. Supposing I just playing basketball or skied or swan?
If my objective is to play a sport better, I would do better to play that sport. If I go swimming, play basketball or ski, I improve my performance in that spot – but it may make only a negligible contribution to my general muscular and cardio – respiratory fitness.
We have a name for this phenomenon in physiology. It’s called specificity. It means that if you want to train for an event, you practice that event, or exercise in a manner that simulates its requirements. A healthy mind under control is man’s best friend and guide. Given such a mind and a desire to learn, a student can learn by his own efforts, with the assistance of the teacher or even without. In fact, one learns best when one learns by one’s own efforts, for how much knowledge can a teacher pass on to his pupil? Also, the knowledge that the teacher imparts may turn out to be outdated, if not also wrong. The most a teacher can do is to give his pupil a sense of direction, that is, tell him what to learn and how to learn it and also how to apply that knowledge for his own good and the good of his community.
The relationship between the teacher and the taught is exactly like the relationship of the gardener and the flowers on the brush. The gardener does not create the flowers from the soil and the manure; the flowers must themselves come from the brush. The gardener can only tend its roots, water it, protect it, see that it has the correct amount of sunlight and shade-all these externals he can provide. But no more mere gardener can guarantee te blossom; it can only from the brush itself.
Similarly, the teacher’s job is to nurture the student with right thoughts. The student must be given a conductive to live. But the blossoming-the real fragrance and beauty of the personality-must come from within.
If contemporary education is to be value-based, it can never be done without the teacher themselves understanding, appreciating and upholding the life-sustaining moral values. The teachers cannot have any excuse whatsoever. If one cannot practise these values, one should not dream of teaching as a job. In fact, teaching is not a job. Classification of Yoga

Devotion mixed with discrimination is an ides path. Without Therfore, the place of Buddhi in Bhakti yoga is very significant. When the Lord is pleased with his devotees, He bestows His grace in the form of pure intellect . Shri Krishna himself promises in Bhgwad Gita:
“To those who are ceaselessly devoted to Me and Who worship Me with immense love, I grand Budhi yoga by which they come to Me.”
A concentrated mind alone is a fit instrument for prolonged and deep meditation on the Divine. Imtellect alone can do this since it is superior to the mind and the senses.
Dhayana Yoga :
The mind is superior to the senses and the intellect is superior to the mind. Through the constant practice of meditation, we gain control over our senses and mind, which helps us to develop the power of concentration.
Karma Yoga :
No one can renounce work but if we learn the skill of performing work, the same work will release us from the bondage of karma.
Shri Krishna clearly says that even to perform work in the right spirit one must exercise his intellectual faculty. Even a little work, done with the spirit of self-sacrifice and dedication, gives a sense of fulfilment. Therefore, intelligent people always choose the path of selfless work using their discriminative faculity. To work and yet to be free from the effects of work requires subtle understand of the secret of work and such understanding comes from Budhi.
Jnana Yoga :
Discrimination between the real and the unreal is called Viveka Budhi alone has the capa ral nature of an object. In the path of knowledge, the aspirant has to realize the Truth by constant reasoning and through Budhi alone this can be done.
Ordinarily we speak of four yoga, the royal roads to Reality, viz. Jnana, Bhakti, Raja and Karma Yoga’s. Strangely enough, the Bhagvata does not recognize Rajayoga as an independent path. It speaks of only three. Shri Krishna says to Uddava : ”I have propounded three Yoga for none other anywhere. Jnana Yoga for those who are disillusioned with after world and have given up Karma; Karmayoga for those who hanker after worldly pleasure and are attached to Karma.
And so one feels it clearly in oneself where one wants it or not; but if one doesn’t one still have a life of goodwill, a life of service, of understanding; one can labour for the work to be accomplished more easily-all thar-one can do many things. But between this and doing yoga there is a great difference. And to do Yoga, you must want it consciously.
